Product Safety & Compliance
Last updated: 3 October 2026
Children deserve products that are safe as well as fun. This page explains the safety standards we expect from every Seller on ToysWoys and how you can help keep little ones safe.
1. BIS / ISI certification for toys
Under the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020, toys designed or intended for use in play by children under 14 years of age must meet the applicable Indian Standards (including IS 9873 for toys and IS 15644 for electric toys) and carry the BIS Standard Mark (ISI mark) under a valid licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards, unless a specific legal exemption applies.
On ToysWoys:
- Every Seller listing toys covered by the Order must hold a valid BIS licence (or a valid legal exemption) and must provide it to us on request.
- Toys covered by the Order must carry the ISI mark and licence number on the product and/or packaging.
- We may ask Sellers for certificates, test reports and licence details, and we may remove listings or suspend Sellers who cannot provide them.
2. Age grading
- Every toy must show a clear age grade (for example "3+ years" or "8–14 years") on the product page and packaging.
- Age grades are based on safety, not on how clever a child is. A toy marked 3+ may contain small parts that are unsafe for a younger child, even if the child seems ready for it.
- Teen and hobby products (such as model kits, science kits, RC vehicles and craft tools) may contain sharp tools, small parts, chemicals or batteries and should be used as directed, with adult supervision where advised.
3. Warnings and labelling
Sellers must clearly show all relevant warnings on the product page and packaging, including:
- Small parts / choking hazard: for example, "WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD – Small parts. Not for children under 3 years."
- Button / coin batteries and magnets: these can cause serious injury if swallowed. Keep away from young children and seek medical help immediately if swallowed.
- Balloons, cords, strings and long straps: risk of choking or strangulation.
- Electrical and ride-on toys: usage instructions, battery and charging safety, and the need for protective gear and supervision.
- Craft and science kits: chemical, heat or sharp-tool warnings, as applicable.
Products must also carry the declarations required under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, such as the manufacturer/importer/packer name and address, MRP, net quantity, month and year of manufacture or import, country of origin and consumer care details.
4. Clothing and stationery
- Kids clothing must be accurately labelled for size, fabric composition and care instructions. Sellers should avoid hazards such as loose buttons, long drawstrings around the neck and hood, and sharp trims, especially for babies and young children.
- Kids stationery and art supplies should be labelled for age suitability, and any claims such as "non-toxic" must be true and backed by the manufacturer.
- Any product covered by a mandatory BIS Quality Control Order or other Indian law must comply with it.
5. Seller accountability
Sellers on ToysWoys are fully responsible for the safety, quality, labelling and legal compliance of the products they list. By listing on ToysWoys, each Seller confirms that:
- their products meet all applicable Indian laws and standards, including BIS requirements;
- product information, age grades, certifications and warnings are accurate and complete;
- they will not list counterfeit, unsafe, banned or recalled products; and
- they will cooperate promptly with any complaint, investigation or recall.
ToysWoys may remove any listing, hold payments, suspend or permanently remove any Seller, and inform the authorities if we find or are told about unsafe or non-compliant products.
6. Tips for parents
- Always check the age grade and warnings before buying and before giving a toy to a child.
- Remove and throw away all plastic bags, ties and packaging before giving toys to young children.
- Check toys regularly for wear and tear, loose parts or sharp edges. Throw away broken toys.
- Keep toys meant for older children away from younger siblings.
- Supervise children during play, especially with ride-on, electric, water or craft toys.
- Store batteries and magnets safely out of reach.
